Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dragon: Which Students Can Actually Use Speech Recognition

The question we are asked most often by Australian schools is not “does dictation work?” It is narrower and more practical than that: this particular student is bright, articulate, and handing in written work that is nowhere near what they are capable of — would speech recognition help, and is Dragon the right tool for them?

The honest answer is that dictation helps a great many of these students, and that Dragon is the right tool for some of them but not all. Which one you are looking at depends less on the diagnosis than on what the student actually needs the software to do.

Why Writing Is the Bottleneck, Not the Thinking

Consider a student we will call Maya — an illustrative composite rather than a real student, but a pattern any learning support teacher will recognise. Maya is in Year 8. Ask her about the novel her class is studying and she will give you a considered argument with evidence. Ask her to write 500 words on it and you will get four short paragraphs of simple sentences that read as though a much younger student wrote them.

Nothing is wrong with Maya’s thinking. The problem is everything that sits between the thought and the page.

For a student with dysgraphia, that in-between layer is the physical and organisational act of writing — letter formation, grip, speed, fatigue. Handwriting consumes so much attention that the ideas queued up behind it get lost before they are recorded. For a student with dyslexia, the layer is spelling. Every longer or less familiar word becomes a judgement call, and the reliable strategy is to swap it for a shorter word the student is confident about. The writing that results is careful, short, and sells the student badly.

Both conditions produce the same visible outcome — spoken ability well ahead of written output — and the two frequently occur together. Research on writing consistently separates these lower-order transcription demands from the higher-order work of generating and organising ideas, and finds that the two compete for the same limited attention. Remove the transcription barrier and many students produce longer, more accurate work that better reflects what they know. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why dictation is treated as a reasonable adjustment in Australian schools rather than as a shortcut.

It is worth being equally clear about what dictation does not do. It does not teach spelling, it does not remediate dyslexia, and it does not improve handwriting. It is a way around the barrier, not a treatment for it.

Where Dragon Fits — and Where It Is Harder for Students

Dragon has been the default recommendation in Australian schools for the better part of two decades, and for a particular group of students it remains the strongest option available.

Dragon suits the student who needs to operate the computer by voice, not just dictate into it. If a student has a physical disability, a significant motor impairment, an injury or a chronic pain condition that makes keyboard and mouse use difficult, Dragon’s depth matters: full Windows voice control, navigation, mouse commands, custom macros, correction workflows, and the ability to run entirely on the local machine without an internet connection. Nothing in the lower-cost end of the market matches that command-and-control depth. For senior secondary and university students with heavy, specialised writing loads, the perpetual licence and offline operation are also genuine advantages.

There are two practical reasons Dragon does not suit every student, and it is better for everyone if schools hear them plainly.

The first is cost. Dragon Professional 16 is A$994, with the educational and student edition at A$545 — current Australian pricing including GST from Voice Recognition Australia as at July 2026; verify current pricing before purchase. For a family trialling whether dictation helps at all, or a school wanting to put it in front of a dozen students, that is a substantial commitment to make before anyone knows whether the student will take to dictating.

The second is the age of the voice. Speech recognition systems are built and tuned predominantly on adult speech, and children’s and younger teenagers’ voices are measurably harder for any speech recognition system to handle — higher pitch, developing articulation, more variable pace and volume. The published research on child speech recognition is consistent that accuracy tends to improve as students get older, rather than being uniform across ages. In practice this means a Year 11 student will usually have a smoother experience with a traditional voice-profile system than a Year 4 student will, and it is why the old advice to “put the child on Dragon” sometimes ended with the software quietly shelved and the student back to fighting the pen.

This is not a knock on Dragon so much as a statement about what it was designed for. It is a professional tool built for professional users, and it is very good at that job. But it does mean a second option needs to be on the table for schools and families — and for most of the students described at the top of this article, it is the one to try first.

For schools buying more than one licence

Making Dictation Work in Practice

Whichever product a student ends up with, the same practical factors decide whether it succeeds.

Dictation is a taught skill. Students need to learn to speak in complete phrases, to pause naturally rather than mid-clause, and to keep going instead of stopping to fix every word. Dropping the software on a student’s desk without this instruction is the single most common reason a trial fails.

Proofreading has to be explicitly taught, and it is different from ordinary proofreading. A dictation error is usually a real, correctly spelled word that is not the one the student said — which means a spell-checker will never flag it. Students need a routine for reading back what they dictated, ideally out loud.

The microphone and the room matter more than people expect. A decent headset microphone in a reasonably quiet space will outperform a laptop’s built-in microphone in a noisy classroom by a wide margin, on any product.

Exam use is a separate decision. Australian assessment authorities do allow assistive technology in some circumstances, but approval is case-by-case, applied for in advance, and may require certain features to be disabled. Adjustments are also expected to reflect the student’s usual way of working — which is a strong argument for introducing dictation as routine classroom practice early, rather than as a special measure shortly before exams.

Get the right professional input. An occupational therapist is the right referral where the barrier is motor or fatigue-related; a specialist teacher or psychologist where it is literacy-based. The software is one part of a support plan, not the whole of it.
